Oscar Hammerstein II †Lyricist, Writer, Producer, Director Essay Example for Free

Oscar Hammerstein II – Lyricist, Writer, Producer, Director Essay Oscar Hammerstein II was born July 12, 1895 in New York, New York. He died August 23, 1960 in Doylestown, Pennsylvania of stomach cancer. His given name was Oscar Greeley Clendenning Hammerstein. When he entered the theatre profession, he dropped his middle names and adopted the â€Å"II† from the grandfather for which he was named. His grandfather was a theatre builder and opera company producer. By titling himself â€Å"II† he capitalized on his grandfather’s success; the name recognition alone was a career builder. Hammerstein was always interested in the theatre. His father, although a theatrical producer himself, did not want his son to go into the â€Å"family business†. He made him promise â€Å"never to do anything as foolish as to consider making the theatre your livelihood. Become a lawyer. You’d be great at it and it’s also one of the more secure professions I know of.† â€Å"Getting to Know Him – Biography of Oscar Hammerstein II† Hugh Fordin As per his father’s wish, Hammerstein entered Columbia University as an English major. He was an honor student and was involved in many extra-curricular activities; one of which was the Varsity Show. This was where Hammerstein met Larry Hart and the man with whom he would later collaborate, Richard Rodgers. At the time of the initial meeting, Rodgers was only a fourteen year old boy whose older brother Morty was a member of Hammerstein’s fraternity. Although his father had passed away, Hammerstein felt compelled to honor his father’s wishes and entered Columbia law school. He finished his Bachelor’s degree during his first year of law school. During his second year of law school, Hammerstein was so disenchanted with the law he asked his uncle Arthur, a successful producer of musical comedies, for a job. He was hired as an assistant stage manager. After witnessing his nephew’s theatrical ability, Uncle Arthur hired him as a permanent member of the staff. Soon after having been hired by his uncle, he began an apprenticeship with Otto Harbach. What began as an apprenticeship turned into a twenty year collaboration and produced Hammerstein’s first Broadway success Always You. Over the course of his career Hammerstein would collaborate with many different composers notably, Jerome Kern, Vincent Youmans, Rudolf Friml and Sigmund Romberg. Hammerstein’s most successful collaboration would be with the man he had met during his varsity show days at Columbia University, Richard Rodgers. The collaboration with Richard Rodgers began in the early 1940’s with their adaptation of the play Green Grow the Lilacs. This became Oklahoma! and changed Broadway forever. Oklahoma! revolutionized the Broadway theater by integrating the music and book. Previously only Show Boat and Pal Joey, respectively a Hammerstein and a Rodgers production, had used songs to further the story along. Oklahoma! not only used the songs as an integral part of the story but it also incorporated American ballet. The opening was different – only one person on stage with an offstage voice singing as the curtain opened. The female chorus didn’t appear until 45 minutes into the play. The â€Å"chorus† girls where covered in period dress. There were no â€Å"star vehicle† numbers. No song in this musical play was written to become a popular hit. Oklahoma! changed the American musical theatre and gave Hammerstein, who had been battling a career slump, a new burst of energy for the most successful period of his career.

The After Effects Of World War One History Essay

The After Effects Of World War One History Essay World War I has been an event of the great significance for its times. According to its dimensions and after effects it did not have the equalities within the previous history of the humanity. The First World War lasted 4 years 3 months and 10 days (from August 1, 1914 till November 11, 1918), 38 countries were involved within the war processes, at that times nearly 1,5 milliard, approximately two thirds of all the Earths population, people dwelled within these countries  [1]  . The multimillion armies took parts within the battlefield processes, which used the newest technologies of the military powers. It is a well known fact that a number of so called inhumane weapons (it is contemporary relation to such military forces and techniques) was tested during the World War I and used for the later military conflicts. General number of the soldiers participating within the WWI reached 73,5 million people and the war brought very significant damage to the civilians dwelling on the ter ritories the war occupied. 10 million people were killed during the conflict (historian, investigating the subject came to the conclusion that so many number of people were killed during the military conflicts in a period of a thousand years, which were held within the European continent) and 20 million of injured these are the results of these conflicts. According to the data provided within the investigations on the subject the direct expenses of participating in the conflict countries were nearly 208 milliards of dollars, which is 10 times larger than the cost of the wars lasting since 1793 to 1907  [2]  .The war provided a significant impact on the whole development of the historical processes: it caused the sharpening of the class fight, activation of the nationalist movements; the war was one of the main reasons that increased rising of objective pre-conditions of the socialist revolution in the Russian empire. Some left-oriented historians considered that the World War I and the Revolution of 1917 in Russia caused the total crisis of capitalism and it was one of the most significant after effects that impacted the history development within the countries involved in the conflict. The history of the WWI attracted attention of the numerous investigators, from different countries in the whole world. The writers were intended to analyze the reasons from different aspects, economical sociological military and examined it after effects. They analyzed cardinal questions dealing with the roots, processes and lessons of the war lasting during the 1914 1918, its impact on the further economical development, socio-political life of the conflicting countries, the role of the every participant and the character of the military operations and military tactic arts. The investigation of the First World War is still acute within the contemporary realities as it strongly deals to the one of the most significant, even burning questions the problem of the peace and t he war. The generation of people living in age of nuclear missiles turn to the past for the better understanding the present day events. We and our contemporaries are eager to learn what the reasons were and what newest military missiles were used during the war in order to understand present days events. Creating of the military political groups in Europe and armament race sharpened the difficult relation between the imperialistic countries more and more. They provided tensions within the international relations and rather calm world history changed on the more conflict, catastrophic and irregular policy of relations between the countries. It goes without saying that the sharpening of the imperialist confrontations started earlier than the war. It was already observed during the Morocco Crisis in 1905 1906 and 1911; Bosnia crisis of the 1908 1909; Italy Turkish was lasting during the 1911 1912, Balkan wars of 1912 -1913. The most significant confrontation of that period was sending the military mission to Turkey by German government, it was headed by general von Sanders and aimed on reorganization and tutoring of the Turkish army (the events happened in December 1913). Preparing for the war the governing rows of imperialistic government created powerful military industry, the basis of which were the most big and significant governmental plants ordnance factories, gunpowder factories, ammunition factories, cartridge-manufacturing plants, shipbuilding yards and many others. The private enterprises were involved to the process of military goods and production in Germany there were Krupp factories and plant, in Austria Hungary Schneider Krezo and St. Chaumont, in Great Britain Wickers and Armstrong Whitworth, in Russia Putilovs factory and many other private manufacturers. The imperialists of both confronting coalitions were faithfully supporting the military industry, they energetically fixed their defense powers and it is essential that all the contemporary investigations and discoveries of science and techniques were aimed on the providing and supporting military industry and helped to developed radically new tactics of military conflicts. The newer, more perfect armor appeared: rapid rate rifles and machine guns, which provided increasing of the firing powers of the infantry forces; within the artillery arms there was observed significant growth of the quantity in rifled-barrel guns of the newest systems. It goes without saying that the development of railroads had also been a part of the strategic plan. Their role was strategically very significant as they helped to fasten the centralization and deploying for action of the large military masses by the human inputs and any other type of material and technical supports of the army. The role of autom obile transport also started to increase. The military air forces appeared it was really the first military conflict where aviation was used as a military force for bombing, it was innovation that changed the whole idea of the contemporary military confrontation. The usage of the newest means of communication such as telephone, telegraph and radio helped the leaders of the military troops to provide all the necessary arrangements within the army they were leading. The number of soldiers was increasing significantly and well-taught arrearage forces had also appeared during this period of the military development. It goes without saying that imperialist nature of the majority states involved in the WWI was playing probably one of the most significant roles in the military development of the countries. In the field of naval military forces there was severe confrontation between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Germany. Both countries provided huge expenses for supporting their military naval forces. From the 1905 the new type of military ships was involved the dreadnought type of ships. Up to the 1914 the German naval forces firmly occupied the second place in the highly developed naval forces after the United Kingdom. It goes without saying that the other countries were also intended to develop their naval forces, but financial and economical facilities did not let them to provide the set shipbuilding programs. The increased armament drive was overwhelming and as a result it needed significant financial inputs as it usually happened the labor class was supporting all these expenses. The wide spread was provided to the ideological support and preparation to the First World War. The Imperialist leaders tried to persuade the nations about inability to avoid serious military confrontation between the states, the militarism became a part of the propaganda and was forced into the applications, chauvinism has also became a significant force for militarism propaganda the leaders of empires used to reach the set aims. It goes without saying that all means of propaganda were used: public means, literature, arts, church are among the most influential and significant for that period. Bourgeoisie of all the states, playing with the patriotic feelings of the different nations, found the real justification for armament race, providing a perfect mask for the expansionist policies by the massaging the theme of the necessity to defend their motherland from the external enemies (i. e. the other countries taking the leading positions on the armament drive). It goes without saying that the governmental forces at those times, supported by the biggest manufacturers of their countries were intended to solve certain problems with the help of the War. It goes without saying that German government (supported by Krupp manufacturing powers) were intended to enlarge the territory of the state as Germany being separated for quite long period of time did not participated on the military arena and did not take part in the carving up the colonies and territories. German Kaiser Wilhelm II was very ambitious person and supported by the key industrialists he promoted his expanding policy. The internal policy of the Germany at the time of so called The Long Fuse by historians was also aimed on concentration the powers within the Kaisers hands. He was the one who set his ideas as seeking for the place in the sun for the German nation. Kaiser was the one who found explanation of his policy within the national interest. He built strong military machine due to the Tirpitz plan and was without any doubts successfully confronting British fleet. Being one of the most significant figure in the war Wilhelm II was not the one who forced the events, he just did not prevented the activity of Austria Hungary. The same time he did not paid enough attention to control the socialist movements in Germany, which also played a significant role and provided an impact on the World War I and made Kaiser to refuse from his title and leave the country. According to Versailles Peace Act Wilhelm II was called the main war criminal, who was supporting the conflict. It would be necessary to say that all the leaders of some imperialist countries (the core participant in WWI) were relatives Kaiser, Russian king, Nicholas II and British King George V. It goes without saying that confrontation between the Germany and Britain made both George V and Kaiser seek for the suitable their region politics. George V refused all the German titles when the war broke up. Alongside with the imperialist leaders there should be mentioned alternative forces. The real force that could prevent the expansion policy of the imperialist government was so called international labor class, which consisted of nearly 150 million people. The labor movement in the worldly measures was headed by the International, which united 41 socio-democratic parties from 27 world countries consisting of 3,4 million members. But the opportunist leaders of the socio-democratic parties from Europe could do nothing for providing in life the anti-military decision of the 2nd International congresses, which took place accurately before the WWI started. As it usually happened the strong political forces supported the governmental policies of their imperialist leaders and voted in the parliaments for supporting the military credits. The Socialist leaders of France, Great Britain and Belgium even took part participating within the bourgeoisie military governments. 2nd International ideol ogy was ruined and it stopped its existence. It should be noted that the left oriented parties of Russia and Germany were the ones that kept on the anti-militarist policy and did not supported the war. The Russian scenario is well known all over the world. At first the leftists did not supported the military strategy provided by the king, strongly criticizing the intension of the Russian leaders to participate in the WWI and finally it ended by the Revolution of 1917, refuse for further participation in the WWI and Civil war in Russia. The Leftists were supporting the idea that the war is imperialist and do not have any brighter perspectives for the working class all over the world. They were supported by the German social-democrats and some French socialist leaders. The revolutionary ideas provided also very significant impact on the WWI and further development of European history. The German November Revolution was the one that played significant role for the whole war processes and the people cant stand oppressive military policy anymore. It would be hardly to define was it good or was it not but it is the historical lesson. Kaiser, even supported by manufacturers could do nothi ng with the growing indignation from the masses. The German scenario did not cost so many ruins for the country as the Russian one, but it was a total loss of the campaign. The united European power oppressed Kaiser and he could not keep on anymore. It goes without saying that all the united factors started the war and the united factors ended it. The most powerful world states were involved in the conflicts and it was looking like the demonstration of scientific and technical achievements of the confronting sides  [3]  , expanding policies of the country that did not took part in the main division of the colonies and the participation of the private companies in the supporting the war processes. In the end I would like to return to the very beginning. The represented statistical data, the death rates, the appearing of inhuman weapons that is still become a very contradictory question. The whole WWI was the shift moment in the world and especially European history. It showed who actually who is, the demonstration of power and forces showed the equipment and the results of armament rate. The revolution and socialist leaders and ambivalent figure of Lenin in Russian Revolution of 1917 all these were powers involved in the WWI, the results of which are really significant if we look back to observe them. The start of the new division and the expansion policies could be hardly accepted by contemporary society but the case of Kaiser Wilhelm II and other military leaders, who were intended to demonstrate the powers, the united powers that stressed Europe are really good lessons from the history. The after effects were different for the many countries. But we know that in the end the re was significant crisis in Europe and US and other countries involved in WWI. Understanding the core ideas and lessons of the First World War is really important for contemporary world. The First World War gave a strong push to the development of missiles of massive attacks and the first weapons of mass destruction were tried. Personally I think that in the present day world such type of conflicts is impossible as the results were undertaken. Historians still argue of the roots of WWI conflict that stressed all the European powers and make them either unite or confront and the common reason is one. During the 10 years Europe was living under the tension and stress, the small attempts of the territory fights were not enough for the countries growing their weapons and making significant inputs into the military and defense industry (it should be noted that manufacturers also supported the idea of the military conflict and took an active part in supporting the governmental forces). T hey need to demonstrate the power and start the re-division, more significant than Morocco crisis and the result was WWI engaging the strongest European forces.

Phonics: How children learn to read

Phonics: How children learn to read Phonics is probably one of the most important parts on how children learn to read. I will discuss the 12 key concepts from the National Reading Panels report on phonemic awareness and phonics instruction. I will also go over how phonemic awareness and phonics instruction can support a balanced reading program. How sounds are used in words is very important to teach students to learn to read. Students need to know that words are made up of phonemes and that they need instruction to help them learn about phonemes. Students will learn to read when phonemic awareness is taught and student needs to know how to manipulate phonemes by using letters of alphabet. I believe that most students can learn to read using phonemic instruction. There are several ways a student can demonstrate phonemic awareness. When a student can segment words into separate sounds such as /c/ /a/ /t/ is one way. Another way is when the student can identify that a set of words begins with the same sound, such as dog, day and down. These words begin with the letter /d/. Thirdly when a student can isolate and say the first or last sound in a word, such as beginning sound of the word fun is /f/ or the ending sound of fat is /t/. Lastly another way to show awareness is if a student can combine sounds in words like /h/ /a/ /t/ to make the word hat. If students demonstrate these skills they will be way ahead in learning to read and spell. Phonemic awareness and phonic sound like they are the same thing, but I will explain the difference between the two. First, phonics is the relationship between letters and sounds in written language. Phonemic awareness is the sounds of spoken language that work together to form words. But phonemic awareness is taught in phonics instruction, so they do work together. Phonemic awareness students will be able identify and manipulate individual sounds in words while in phonological awareness students will be able to recognize parts of spoken language. This usually will include rhyming, and rime, alliteration, intonation and syllables. Some examples of phonemic awareness are when a student can identify a word such as /h/ /a/ /t/. In phonological awareness students will be able to identify the word frog as /fr/ /o/ /g/ or /fr/ or /og/ When a student can start identifying, making oral rhymes such as, rat and cat, the student is showing they have phonological awareness. Another great example when the student can identify and work with onset and rime in syllables, for example hip and it. Also, a student can clap a word so they can hear the syllables in the spoken word. They can use a word they like or their name, such as Kay-lin. Lastly, a student can identify and work with individual phonemes in spoken words like the first sound in hat. To teach phonemic awareness a teacher can use many techniques. The first example is phoneme isolation. This is where the student will be able to recognize individual sounds in a word. A student will understand that the first sound in hat is /h/. Another example a teacher can use is phoneme identify where a student will be able to recognize the same sound in different words. For example the words tall, talk and toad is /t/. Thirdly is phoneme categorization. This is when a student will be able to recognize a word in a set of words that will have a different sound. In a set of words like, fly, fun and sit, will not fit because the word does not start with /f/. The fourth one I will discuss is phoneme blending. Phoneme blending is when a student will be able to listen to a sequence of separately spoken phonemes, combine the phoneme to make a word, write and read the word. Students who will hear a sound like /f/ /a/ /t/ and will know the word is that as well as write the word. Fifth, is phoneme segmentation. This is where a student will be able to break apart a word into separate sounds. For example the student can tap their foot or count the word out such as /f/ /r/ /o/ /g/. The student will understand that the word frog has four sounds. Then the student will be able to write and read the word. Phoneme deletion is the sixth way. This is when a student recognizes a word that remains when a phoneme is removed to form another word. For example a student given the word small and can recognize that mall is the word remaining when the phoneme /s/ is removed. The seventh is phoneme addition. This is when a student can make a totally new word by adding a phoneme to an existing word. For example, the word an and then told to add the letter /c/ to the beginning and the word now is can. The eighth one is phoneme substitution. This is when a student will be able to substitute one phoneme for another to make a new word. A student may be given a word such as hot and asked to ch ange the /t/ to a /p/. Now the student will say the word, hop. After the above techniques are learned the student will have phonemic awareness. A student will improve their reading and spelling with phonemic awareness instruction. Phonemic awareness will also help increase a students vocabulary knowledge. Segmenting words is one way to have the student learn to read and it will also help them to spell. Being able to read accurately is very important for students to be able comprehend what they just read and the students need to stay focused on the meaning of what they are reading. Phonemic awareness is key for a student to be able to understand what they read. It will also help to reduce the stress of sounding out words and having the student taking too many pauses and losing focus of where they are at when reading. A student being able to manipulate phonemes will show that that he or she is becoming phonemically aware. A student will be able to improve how they spell and read if the student is taught that sounds and letters are used in phonemic awareness to reading and writing. It is very important not to teach several of the methods listed above all at once. As a teacher we do not want to confuse our students. It is a great idea to focus on a couple of the techniques until they can master those and then move on to other techniques if needed. Also, we need to be careful to use techniques that will be at the student literacy level. Again, if we teach above the students level, the student can become very irritated, and if taught below their level they may become bored and their behavior may change. I believe that teaching phonemic awareness is very effective when it is taught in small groups. Students thrive in this type of setting because they like to hear what their classmates are doing or what their classmates think of their work especially if it is positive. Of course phonemic instruction will not guarantee a student will be a successful reader but it sure will help with success. Now I will go over seven key concepts that the NRP has on phonics instruction. Phonics instruction teaches relationship between letters and sounds. This helps students learn and use the alphabetic principals so students will comprehend that there are predictable and systematic relationship between written letters and spoken sounds. This also will help student remember how to read words with phonics instruction. The first and probably the most effective concept is systematic and explicit phonics. Phonics instruction teaches students letter sound relationship. This will aid the students in practicing and applying phonics to materials they can use like books that will have several words. This will help the student to decode letter sound relationships with spelling words or in writing. Secondly, the next concept is that kindergarten and first grade students can be successful with word recognition and spelling will improve with systematic and explicit phonics instruction. When a student uses phonics instruction in early childhood there is a greater chance of success that they will be able to read at their current grade level or above. They will also probably be able to write, thus having students to have better comprehension skills. The third concept is to improve student reading comprehension. This can be done with systematic and explicit phonics instruction. If a student can read with fluency and less stopping, the student will be able to understand what they are reading. If student has to keep stopping to sound out words, the student can lose track of what they just read. Again, the earlier the better The fourth concept is that students from various social economic levels need systematic and explicit phonics instruction. This is basically saying that all students can learn to read this way regardless of their socioeconomically background. I do think it may be more difficult for students to keep up if they do not have guidance at home. The fifth concept is that students who are having difficulty learning to read and who are at risk for developing future reading problems need systematic and explicit phonics instruction. The idea behind this concept that students who are at risk can be benefited from this because words will become automatic helping students to read quickly with more accuracy. The sixth concept is that when systematic and explicit phonics instruction is introduced early that it can be very effective. Teachers need to make sure that phonic skills are introduced at grade level or age appropriateness. For example a student in kindergarten may be using letter shapes and letter sounds. Lastly, the seventh concept is that this is not a complete reading program. Students still need learn and have knowledge in alphabet engaging phonemic tasks and having a teacher read to them so they can gain listening skills as well. I know that my third grade son is just now starting to read books on his own and this is giving him confidence in able to read other materials. His teacher also is still reading to the whole class. He is also writing stories on his own. Now I will go over the five parts of a balanced reading program. They are phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and text comprehension. These all will help students to understand phonemic awareness if they learn to segment words into syllables. Students will also be able to blend phonemes and manipulate phonemes to form new words, thus helping them to read and comprehend. Hopefully students will be given opportunities to apply what they learn about phonics in everyday living. Phonics will help the student with word recognition, spelling and reading comprehension. I currently work in a 3rd /4th grade classroom and I notice when a student is struggling to read fluently, they are having a difficult time understanding what they are reading. So students need to have this type of behavior modeled for them and students need to practice reading out loud. This way a teacher can evaluate and set goals. The more fluidly they are when they read, the more they will want to read. Vocabulary is very important as well. It is crucial for students to be able to communicate so they can get their ideas and thoughts across clearly. It will also help if they know what the words mean when they are reading them. Students can learn vocabulary in many areas of their lives. They can listen to their peers, their parents and siblings. Teachers and parents can also make sure the student is reading on a daily basis. Also, a teacher can directly teach vocabulary words. Lastly we will discuss text comprehension. This is one area my son struggles with. He is now being able to read faster and this is helping actually understand what he is reading. His teacher has been giving him strategies to help him read his text through cooperative learning, explicit instruction and silent reading. Becoming an educator, when I use these techniques, I will be able to help my students to be successful in reading and writing. After being in a classroom for the last two years I understand that these techniques are imperative and must be implemented in the classroom. Like I tell my children in sports practice if you want to get better. I will make sure my students will have access to interesting reading materials and I will have them doing many writing tasks. The great thing about phonics is that it can be taught individually or in groups. A teacher should take notice though if a student needs more help than other students. Again, the earlier a child begins to use phonics the better chance of a successful reader. Haemophilia: Causes, Symptoms and Treatments Haemophilia: Causes, Symptoms and Treatments Ayman Jomaa Haemophilia is an inherited draining issue in which the blood does not cluster appropriately. This can prompt spontaneous draining and also draining succeeding wounds or surgery, Blood holds numerous proteins called thickening variables that can help to quit dying. Individuals with haemophilia have low levels of either variable VIII (8) or component IX (9). So in simple words haemophilia is an uncommon innate (inherited) draining issue in which blood cant cluster typically at the site of an injury or damage. The issue happens in light of the fact that certain blood coagulating elements are missing or dont work legitimately. This can result in amplified draining from a cut or wound. Spontaneous interior draining can happen too, particularly in the joints and muscles. Haemophilia influences guys considerably more regularly than females. Types of inherited haemophilia: Type A: the most widely recognized sort is brought about by an inadequacy of component VIII, one of the proteins that helps blood to structure clumps. Type B: haemophilia is created by a lack of element IX. Despite the fact that haemophilia is generally diagnosed during childbirth, the issue can additionally be procured sometime down the road if the body starts to prepare antibodies that assault and wreck coagulating components. Notwithstanding, this procured kind of haemophilia is exceptionally uncommon. Causes of haemophilia Haemophilia is brought on by a change or change, in one of the genes, that gives guidelines to making the thickening component proteins required to structure blood coagulation. This change or transformation can keep the coagulating protein from working legitimately or to be missing out and out. These genes are found on the X chromosome. Guys have (XY) and females (XX). Guys inherit the X chromosome from their moms and the Y chromosome from their fathers. Females inherit one X chromosome from each one guardian. The X chromosome holds numerous genes that are not show on the Y chromosome. This implies that guys just have one duplicate of a large portion of the genes on the X chromosome, although females have 2 duplicates. Therefore, guys can have an ailment like haemophilia on the off chance that they inherit an influenced X chromosome that has a transformation in either the element VIII or component IX gene. Females can likewise have haemophilia, however this is much rarer. In such cases both X chromosomes are influenced or one is influenced and alternate is missing or idle. In these females, draining manifestations may be like guys with haemophilia. Despite the fact that haemophilia runs in families, a few families have no former history of relatives with haemophilia. Once in a while, there are bearer females in the family, however no influenced young men, simply by shot. In any case, about one-third of the time, the infant with haemophilia is the first in the family to be influenced with a change in the gene for the coagulating element. Haemophilia can bring about: Draining inside joints that can prompt perpetual joint infection and agony Draining in the head and now and again in the mind which can result in long haul issues, for example, seizures and loss of motion Passing can happen if the draining cant be ceased or on the off chance that it happens in an indispensable organ, for example, the mind. Signs and symptoms Prolonged external bleeding and bruising that happens effortlessly or for no obvious reason, are two significant indications of haemophilia. The side effects of haemophilia fluctuate relying upon whether the individual has the mellow, direct, or extreme type of the issue. For individuals with extreme haemophilia, draining scenes happen all the more frequently and with almost no incitement. For those with moderate haemophilia, delayed draining has a tendency to happen after a more noteworthy harm. Individuals with the gentle manifestation of haemophilia may have irregular draining just after a significant damage, surgery, or trauma. Individuals with haemophilia may have any kind of internal bleeding (inside the body), however regularly in the muscles and joints, for example, the elbows, knees, hips, shoulders, and lower legs. Frequently there is no agony at the outset, yet in the event that it proceeds, the joint may get hot to the touch, swollen, and tormenting to move. Repetitive draining into the joints and muscles can result in perpetual harm, for example, joint disfigurement and decreased versatility (capability to get around). Bleeding in the brain is an intense issue for those with extreme haemophilia, and may be life-debilitating. Indications of bleeding in the brain may incorporate changes in conduct, over the top tiredness, tireless cerebral pains and neck torment, twofold vision, heaving, and seizures. Diagnosis Physical examination is done. If you have symptoms of hemophilia, the doctor will obtain information about your family’s medical history, since this disorder tends to run in families. Blood tests are then performed to determine how much factor VIII or factor IX is present in your blood. These tests will show which type of hemophilia you have, and whether it is mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the level of clotting factors in the blood: People who have 5-30% of the normal amount of clotting factors in their blood have mild hemophilia. People with 1-5% of the normal level of clotting factors have moderate hemophilia. People with less than 1% of the normal clotting factors have severe hemophilia Treatment Hemophilia is a complex issue. Great quality therapeutic consideration from specialists and attendants who know a ton about the issue can help keep a few genuine issues. Regularly the best decision is a far reaching hemophilia medication focus (HTC). A HTC gives consideration to deliver all issues identified with the issue, and additionally training. The group comprises of doctors (hematologists or blood pros), medical caretakers, social laborers, physical advisors and other human services suppliers, who are worked in the consideration of individuals with draining issue Blood Clotting Factors: The most ideal approach to treat hemophilia is to supplant the missing clotting factors with the goal that the blood can clump legitimately. This is carried out by infusing industrially ready clotting factor. There are two main types of clotting factor available are: Plasma-Derived Factor Concentrates: Plasma is the fluid compartment of blood. It is bright yellow and holds proteins, for example, antibodies, egg whites and coagulating variables. A few variable focuses that are produced out of human plasma proteins are accessible. All blood and parts of blood, for example, plasma, are routinely tried for the infections. The clotting proteins are divided from different parts of the plasma, decontaminated, and made into a stop dried item. This item is tried and treated to execute any potential infections before it is bundled for use. Recombinant Factor Concentrates The concentrate is hereditarily designed utilizing DNA engineering. Economically ready variable concentrates are dealt with to evacuate or inactivate blood borne infections. Also, recombinant elements VIII (8) and IX (9) are accessible that dont hold any plasma or egg whites and, subsequently, cant transmit any blood borne infections. The items could be utilized as required when an individual is draining or they might be utilized all the time to keep drains from happening. Today, individuals with hemophilia and their families can figure out how to give their thickening element at home. Giving variable at home implies that drains could be dealt with snappier, bringing about less genuine draining and fewer symptoms. Cloning Plants :: essays research papers

Cloning is asexual reproduction. Cuttings are taken from a mother plant in vegatative growth, and rooted in hydroponic medium to be grown as a separate plant. The offspring will be plants that are identical to the parent plant. Cloning preserves the character of your favorite plant. Cloning can make an ocean of green out of a single plant, so it is a powerful tool for growing large crops, and will fill a closet quickly with your favorite genetics. When you find the plant you want to be your "buddy" for the rest of your life, you can keep that plant's genetic character alive for decades and pass it on to your children's children. Propagate and share it with others, to keep a copy, should your own line die out. A clone can be taken from a clone at least 20 times, and probably more, so don't worry about myths of reduced vigor. Many reports indicate it's not a problem. Cloning will open you to the risk of a fungus or pests wiping out the whole crop, so it's important to pick plants that exhibit great resistance to fungus and pests. Pick the plant you feel will be the most reliable to reproduce in large scale, based on health, growth rate, resistance to pests, and potency. The quality of the high, and the type of buzz you get will be a very important determining factor. Take cuttings for clones before you move plants from vegetative grow area to the flowering area. Low branches are cut to increase air circulation under the green canopy. Rooted clones are moved to the vegetative growth area, and new clones are started in the cloning area using the low branch cuttings. Each cycle of growth will take from 4-8 weeks, so you can constantly be growing in 3 stages, and harvesting every 6-8 weeks. Some types of plants are more difficult to clone than others. Big Bud is reported to not clone very well. One of my favorite plants, Mr. Kona, is the most amazing pot I ever smoked, but it is hard as hell to clone. What a challenge! I noticed other varieties that were rooting much quicker, but it was the stone I was after! Once you find the psychoactive, almost hallucinogenic properties of some Indica/Sativa hybrids, you never want to smoke a pure Indica again. Indica is however, great medicinally, so I like to grow a few pure strains too.

Essays --

The author of the article â€Å"Why I changed my mind† captured the true picture of the monstrous shadow that stalks teachers in public schools. The NCLB might have been conceived initially with good intentions but had spawned into a creeping threat creating nightmares to educators. Like what Diane Ravitch said, accountability became the stick that is used to punish schools. I think it also created resentment; and this resentment has taken away the joy of teaching and learning. The non-stop assessment to measure if standards have been taught left teachers always on their toes. In effort to cover all concepts included in the test, teachers are left with no choice but scratching on the surface without getting deeper on the content. Not only this leaves students with no mastery, it also resulted in the widening of learning gaps. Teachers, year after year, inherit students who are unprepared and lacking grade level skills. This is evident to some 5th graders in my school who are in still struggling to subtract with regrouping, much more across zeroes. Subtraction with regrouping is first taught in second grade. In addition, with assessments used as a measure of teachers’ performance and determinant of incentives to teachers created inequality. Teachers with students scoring high and receiving monetary incentive may feel elated. While in contrary, teachers who somehow got a group of students who did not perform well are left demoralized. Teachers cannot c hoose their students. With all the factors stated in the article that determines students’ performance, there are other aspects that are beyond the teachers’ control. I personally know a teacher who teaches at a regular public high school, he is very dedicated and almost yearly trained at ... ...w the concepts based from observation and work samples. In several occasions, during benchmarks or in the real test, her scores were one or two questions away from passing. I saw how her morale and self esteem deteriorate. She became so unsure of herself becoming anxious each time a test. Her mother even considered transferring her to a private school so she will not be subjected to state testing. With her morale destroyed, the more she became unfocused during testing. To help her cope, I tried to appease her dismay with encouragement, highlighting her strengths and stressing that her scores are not reflective of whom she is. She seemed to have understood. However, I knew that as she move up to middle school, her test scores will be the first data being looked at. It is a sad reality that all the learning and effort of this student are summarized to her test scores.

Pro Clean Case Essay

Pro Clean’s owner has more than 15 years of experience, has good reputation in Knoxville and has established a sustainable customer base. The company offers good service at considerable price, and maintains good relation with its past customers. Weaknesses: The Company has many problems in its marketing, management and accounting systems. It tries to reach out to customers from every segment, and probably exceeding its capacity. The company’s staff has very limited skills in sales, can only approach certain group of customers, and has ambiguous responsibility in day-to-day functions. Lastly, the company is financially weak, due to poor financial management. This is likely to be the problem to their higher operating cost and cash flow problem. Opportunities: Given the current environment, Pro Clean has certain opportunities to survive in Knoxville. There is clear market segmentation, which to allows Pro Clean to avoid direct competition with competitors from other strategic group. Threats: Pro Clean faces other competitors who offer similar or service at the same price, threatening its customer base. Also, a change in financial policy, such as an increase in interest rates, can threaten the survival of the company, given its current financial situation. (See Appendix C for the SWOT analysis table) Building Core Competency From our analysis in the previous segments, we advise Pro Clean to build its core competency in two dimensions: Customer Relationship in combination with an excellent cleaning service and a high quality. Valuable: By focusing and creating an unique relationship with its customers, Pro Clean can definitely be considered as a valuable company * Rare: Pro Clean will offer a wide range of extra services and supporting tools which aren’t offered by other cleaning companies * In-imitate: By providing innovative services, Pro Clean will enjoy a competitive advantage over its competitors. * Non-substitutable: Once become a member of the custom er base, customers will be offered an excellent service and loyalty programs. The better the relationship between Pro Clean and its customers, the higher the switching costs will be for the customers. Value Chain Analysis The following is a value chain analysis on what activities Pro Clean can do based on their core competencies, and also some of the other activities that they can improve on to give them a strategic competitive advantage: Primary Services: Currently, the service quality of Pro Clean is good and we feel that they can leverage on it, by adding on the hardwood floor cleaning service and improving their scheduling to suit the customers’. Sales & Marketing: To grow the business, Pro Clean should focus on market penetration and increasing their revenue stream from its existing customer base. Increase penetration: * Referral programmes can be initiated by offering discounts to customers who refer their neighbours. * Wilson should also take advantage of the on-site estimate service by rewarding employees who bring in more of such jobs. Doing so should increase the closing rate, and increase sales. * Sales can also be improved by â€Å"advertising† the other services that Pro Clean has to offer. They can also get employees to ask customers if they need other services while they are on-site. * Pro Clean should also explore the possibility of expanding into the commercial business, as it is currently a greatly underserved market. Increase average customer spending: * As a large part of sales is derived from people seeing Pro Clean’s van being driven around the neighbourhood, Pro Clean can get technicians to drive the van around the neighbourhood more often to increase their visibility. They can also come up with a bigger range of packaged services to cross sell to customers. Support Infrastructure: It was identified earlier that Wilson is pretty weak in managing the finances of the company. Hence we recommend that he should outsource this part of the business to an accountant. In addition, we think that he should also move his operations back to his home office to cut costs. HR management: This is an area that also needs to be worked on in order to successfully implemen t the other plans. We think that a new staffing plan is needed. We propose that Turner should be re-hired as a technician for the skills that he already has and keep Scott as the sales/marketing manager. A detailed portrayal of the new organization structure can be found in appendix D. Vision Our aim is to become a household name, associated with high service quality, in the cleaning services industry with 100% customer satisfaction. Mission Statement Our mission is to provide the highest quality cleaning service to our customers, within the shortest response time possible at the convenience of our customers.

Peace and order Essay

Maintenance of public order is a core function of governance. The Indian Constitution, while according a pre-eminent position for the fundamental rights of citizens, recognizes the importance of public order, by providing for legislation imposing reasonable restrictions in the interest of public order. Under the Constitution of India, the Union and the federating units, that is, the States have well-defined areas of responsibility. ‘Public Order’ and ‘Police’ are essentially the responsibilities of State Governments. However, the Central Government assists them by providing Central Paramilitary Forces (CPMFs) as and when required. The Administrative Reforms Commission is looking at ‘Public Order’ with a view to suggest a framework to strengthen administrative machinery to maintain public order conducive to social harmony and economic development. And also to build capacity for conflict resolution. ARC is looking into all aspects of the subject therefore the focus is on studying the causes of public disorder, how early symptoms of disorder should be detected and addressed well in time, what should be the role of various stakeholders in maintenance of public order, how the enforcement machinery should be made more effective to deal with public disorder. The Commission is examining the subject by focusing on its components namely causes of conflicts and their resolution, secondly the role of civil administration, media, society, Judiciary and NGOs in maintaining public order, and thirdly the role of police and the need for reforms. Accordingly each one of these is being discussed in great length in t hree separate workshops. In the first workshop which is being organized jointly with the Centre for Policy Research (CPR), the role of civil administration and other stakeholders would be discussed, in the second workshop, which is being organized jointly with CPR and the Kannada University the different types of conflicts in the Indian Society would be discussed, and in the third workshop being organized jointly with the National Police Academy the Role of Police would be discussed. The aim of the first workshop on public order is to identify the salient  lessons we can learn from a variety of experiences in dealing with public disorder. The workshop will help the ARC to think through some of the challenges posed for the maintenance of public order by the role of the four agencies namely the civil administration, the judicial interventions, the civil society and the media. How can these agencies be strengthened to make them promoters of a more humane public order? What are some of the difficulties that actors in these different domains face? What are some of the commonly leveled criticisms of these agencies? Do these criticisms need some administrative or legal response? What explains the success of failure of these agencies on some occasions. Although the focus of the workshop will be on reforms that can be implemented, this workshop would like to discuss these issues in the widest possible perspective so that new and innovative ideas can be countenanced. The main task of the workshop will be to identify problems and challenges in these domains, and to recommend possible solutions. The purpose of the second workshop that is on ‘Conflict resolution† is to (a) engage in free and frank discussions about the causes of conflicts in India, (b) arrive at some conclusion about the role and importance of different ethnic factors in the origin and continuance of these conflicts so that (c) fundamental solutions can be proposed to address the deep-rooted causes for the sustainable maintenance of public order. The emphasis will be on coming up with specific recommendations pertaining to administrative reform. Similarly the third workshop, which is being organized jointly with the National Police Academy, would focus on the role of police and police reforms.   Before I go into the role of various stakeholders, I would like to clarify the meaning of the word public order. Any violation of Law is a problem of Law and Order, but every such violation is not a case of disturbance of public order. The dividing line between ‘Public order’ and ‘Law and Order’ is very thin. The Apex Court has explained the concept of public order.   It is the potentiality of an act to disturb the even tempo of the life of the community which makes it â€Å"prejudicial to the maintenance of public order†. If the contravention in its effect is confined only to a few  individuals directly involved, as distinct from a wide spectrum of public, it would raise the problem of â€Å"law and order† only. It is the potentiality of the act to disturb the even tempo of the life of t he community which makes it â€Å"prejudicial to the maintenance of public order†. Importance of maintaining public order: India today is poised to emerge as a global economic power with all its high growth rate of economy and all-round economic development. For realizing our legitimate aspirations of economic development, it is essential that the problems of peace and order are managed efficiently in the country. No developmental activity is possible in an environment of insecurity and disorder. Failure to manage the multifarious problems arising out of violent conflicts based on religious, caste, ethnic, regional or any other disputes, can lead to unstable and chaotic conditions. Such conditions not only militate against realization of our economic dream, but also would jeopardize our survival as a vibrant democracy. We have to look at the problem of public order management and the role of law enforcement in that regard, in this perspective. We should not forget that it is the weaker sections which suffer the most in any public disorder. Whose responsibility is to maintain public order-role of civil administration: Undoubtedly, it is the role of the police, as the principal law enforcement agency to preserve public order. The magistracy and the judiciary also have a vital role in preserving public order. But there are other agencies within the governmental set up which have to contribute towards preserving public order. It is the police which bears the brunt of violations of the Laws and also the ensuing violence. But in a large number of addressing the root cause is much beyond their purview. The case of recent demolitions in Delhi is an example. The main cause there has been the non enforcement of the building regulations by the officials who were entrusted this task. Another example is the ‘Ulhasnagar demolitions’. If one looks at the causes of public disorder, there are a host of reasons. These may be broadly classified into socio-economic, political, historical  and administrative. I am not going into the details of each one of these but I would like to highlight that a large number of public disorders have administrative reasons as their root cause. Therefore we have to bring in change in our mindset. Our response to public disorder should commence at the very initial stage, and it is here that the role of entire civil administration including both regulatory and developmental becomes important. The period after independence has seen a tremendous increase in spread of education and alongside has increased the awareness among the people and so also the aspirations. And when these aspirations are not met, tensions prevail within the society, which if not redressed have the potential of erupting as a problem of public disorder. Increasingly, and rightly so, administration is not being perceived as a ruling class. People are realizing that they are service providers. The administration must also realize this role. Wrong doings of administration, which in the past may have got muted acceptance, are no longer being tolerated by the civil society. We have to provide an administration which is fair, objective and transparent. How to achieve this is a challenge before us. Role of the Judiciary: Access to justice is fundamental to the ‘Rule of Law†. If the citizens feel that access to justice is delayed or is not effective, they get alienated. If they feel that punishment is meted out to the wrong doers only in a few cases, they have a tendency to disassociate them with the judicial process and stop taking interest as a complainant, a witness or a pancha. Sometimes a landlord looking to get a recalcitrant tenant out, a tenant seeking protection from an avaricious landlord, families involved in property disputes, start by thinking that gangsters (goondas) can settle their problems which the courts are going to take ages to do. If this becomes common, criminality will be a substitute for ‘Rule of Law’. We have to ensure that we do not reach such a precarious situation. Criminals should be intimidated by what Shakespeare called â€Å"The awful majesty of the law†, other wise they will become a law unto themselves. Various Law Commissions  have suggested reforms in the criminal and civil justice administration system, which need to be acted upon. Role of the media: The importance of a free press, for a healthy democracy cannot be overemphasized. More importantly, it is a sort of check and balance that keeps the authorities on their toes on the one hand and a type of mirror that enables people in authority to get a continuous reality check, on the other. This remains an important role for the media, despite the increasing pressures of commercialization. The fact that democratic India could avoid famines, Amartya Sen has suggested, was almost entirely due to the role of the media in sensitizing authorities to the urgency of providing relief. Indeed our free and energetic media is, in fact, our best early warning system. But what is essential is that the media should play a responsible role. It has been observed that at times, a part of the media has not been quite objective in their reporting. Sometimes the media also plays a role in spreading prejudices, as they needless to say, are more interested in sensational news than sensible constructive news. We may deliberate as to how the potential of media can be tapped in maintaining public order. Role of the Society, NGOs: A democratic society cannot function properly if everything in it is left only to the State or even to statutory bodies. Because of the increasing complexities of societies everything cannot be taken care of by the Governmental institutions. The gap has to be filled up by the civil society. Government intervention itself will be in fructuous if it is not underpinned by voluntary action. Moreover the exercise of political power through civil society opens the way for democracy in real sense of the term. Civil society consists of open and secular institutions that mediate between the citizen and the State. In the absence of civil society, the State machinery and civil servants becomes the dominant and the only repository of power. The modern idea of civil government requires emergence  of civil society which would make people self-reliant rather than remain dependent on State institutions. Participation by the civil society makes the citizens active agents instead of becoming merely passive recipients of welfare. We, especially in the government need to realize that in a healthy growth model of a free democratic society, the Government is just one of the participants. The Government exists as one of the servitors in the service of the society. Indeed the awareness that government alone can neither solve all the problems of the society nor it is the only crucial actor in addressing major societal issues has dictated the need to look beyond Government. Interdependence and need to find solutions to societal problems call for greater collaboration between the government and civil society. A large number of Non Governmental organizations (NGOs) are working in the developmental fields. But the number of such NGOs dedicating themselves to preservation of public order is limited. We can perhaps learn from experiences of some of these NGOs and recommend measures to pave the way for their greater involvement. Role of the Police: I should have taken up the role of police first, as they are the main actors in this process. But as I have mentioned that we will be discussing this issue at great length in the third workshop, which we are organizing at the National Police Academy. But I would suggest that aspects of police administration which require interaction with other governmental agencies and stakeholders may be discussed in this workshop. Conclusion: Development and security are truly mutually inter-related. We need therefore, to evolve a combined strategy to deal simultaneously with the twin challenges of development and security within the framework of a democratic polity committed to respect for all fundamental human freedoms and also committed to upholding the rule of law. Internal conflict management is the key to the success of participative democracy, strengthening national  solidarity and cohesion and firming up the nation’s resolve and capability to meet any external threats to its security and territorial integrity. The deficiencies in this vital area need to be plugged through judicial and police reforms, better citizen participation in governance, transparency and more effective and integrated approach to public order maintenance. Violations of public order, given their socio-economic, political and administrative causes demand a concerted response from different wings of the civil administration. When this is done at the nascent stage itself, minor discords can be prevented from turning into major public disorders. The challenge lies in institutionalizing a mechanism so that all wings of the civil administration as well as other stakeholders work in a coordinated fashion. I hope that these two workshops would be able to come up with substantial recommendations for a framework and a roadmap for maintaining public order.
